Wrexham FAQs

EV charger questions Wrexham homeowners ask

Wrexham covers two quite different jobs. The former mining villages — Rhos, Coedpoeth, Brymbo, Gwersyllt — are dense terraced streets where parking is the question. Out towards the Maelor and the Ceiriog valley it's farms and long driveways, where the supply and the cable run matter more.

Yes — if you have somewhere off-street to park, whether that's a driveway in Marford, a garage in Gresford or a rear yard behind a terrace in Rhos, we can almost certainly fit a charger. Charging at home overnight on an EV tariff is far cheaper than public rapid charging, and around Wrexham the public network is patchy enough that having your own genuinely changes how you use the car. We check the incoming supply, the consumer unit and the earthing arrangement before we quote.

It comes down to where you park. Rhosllanerchrugog, Ponciau, Coedpoeth, Brymbo, Gwersyllt and Johnstown have a lot of tight terraced streets built for the collieries, and many have a rear entry or a back yard — if you can reach it, we can usually mount a charger there and run the cable internally.

If you only ever park on the street outside, you cannot legally trail a cable across a public footway without the council's agreement. Cross-pavement channels, where the cable sits flush in the footway, need consent from Wrexham County Borough Council as highway authority, and grant support for those varies in Wales — so check current eligibility before you budget. Send us a photo of where you park and we'll tell you straight whether it's workable.

Not usually a problem, but worth understanding before you order. Properties out towards the Maelor, the Ceiriog valley and the Dee villages can sit a long way from the nearest transformer, and some have a smaller incoming supply than a modern town house. That doesn't stop you having a charger — load management lets us set it to balance against the rest of the house so you never exceed what the supply can take, rather than paying for an upgrade you don't need.

Where an upgrade genuinely is needed that's a job for SP Energy Networks, and it takes time, so we'd far rather establish that at survey than on installation day. Farms and barn conversions also tend to need longer runs between buildings, which we price properly rather than guess at.

Our Wrexham installs start from £649 supplied, fitted and tested. What moves the price is the charger you pick and the cable run — a modern house in Marford, Borras or Llay with the consumer unit near the drive is at the cheaper end; a village terrace where we're working out to a rear yard, or a rural property with a long run between buildings, costs more. We quote the full figure up front, including any additional electrical work, so there's nothing added on the day.

Most Wrexham installations are done in under 3 hours and you'll be charging the same day. A modern estate house with the consumer unit in the hall is often quicker. Older village terraces where the meter is awkwardly placed, and rural jobs with long runs, take more time. We come down the A483 from our base near Ellesmere Port — it's a straightforward run, and we give you a realistic window when we book rather than a vague morning-or-afternoon.

Almost never. There's a lot of Victorian and early-20th-century housing around Wrexham and we work in it regularly — a full rewire is rarely needed just to add a charger. What we do sometimes find in the older village terraces is an older consumer unit, a shared or looped supply between two houses, or earthing that needs bringing up to current standards. Any of that is identified at survey and priced before we start. A looped supply usually needs your DNO — SP Energy Networks, which covers all of North Wales — to split it, and we handle that application for you.

For most homes, no. Worth knowing though: planning is devolved in Wales, so the rules are set by the Welsh Government and differ in detail from England's — much of the guidance you'll find online is written for England and may not apply to you. In practice a wall-mounted charger on your own property is usually fine.

Where it's worth a check first is in the conservation areas around the town centre and the older villages, if your property is listed, or if you're near the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site around Trevor, Froncysyllte and Cefn Mawr, where the setting is a material consideration. We'll flag it at survey if we think yours needs looking at.

All the major brands — Ohme, Hypervolt, Zappi, Andersen, Simpson & Partners, EVEC and Sync EV, plus others on request. Every new home charger is a 'smart' charger, required by law since June 2022. We'll recommend what actually suits your house and your car rather than the priciest unit on the shelf — a compact untethered unit often makes most sense on a village terrace where wall space is tight, and if you've got solar or a battery, which plenty of rural properties round here do, a Zappi is worth the conversation. If you're claiming a grant, we'll make sure your model is on the OZEV approved list.

Two different things, and both work in your favour. Being NAPIT-certified means we're registered electricians on a Government-approved competent person scheme — every install meets the current wiring regulations (BS 7671, Section 722), is fully tested, and we self-certify and notify Building Control for you. Being OZEV-authorised means we're approved to claim the EV chargepoint grant on behalf of eligible customers. Both matter if you ever sell the house and a buyer's surveyor asks who did the work.

The city and the whole county borough — every postcode from LL11 to LL14. That covers the town centre, Hightown, Caia Park, Borras, Acton, Rhosnesni, Gwersyllt, Llay, Brymbo, Coedpoeth, Bwlchgwyn, Marford, Gresford, Rossett, Holt, Rhosllanerchrugog, Ponciau, Johnstown, Ruabon, Cefn Mawr, Trevor, Froncysyllte, Chirk, Overton, Bangor-on-Dee and the Maelor villages. We come down the A483 from our base near Ellesmere Port, and it's the same team out to you every time, never a subcontractor.

Grant eligibility and amounts change, and some schemes differ in Wales — check gov.uk for the latest before you budget.
