Installing EV chargers across Rhyl & Denbighshire

From the seafront terraces of Rhyl and Prestatyn to the bungalows of Kinmel Bay and inland to St Asaph, Denbigh and Ruthin — we install right across Denbighshire. Exposed coastal properties get a proper conversation about siting, because sea air is harder on outdoor kit than inland weather.

Rhyl FAQs

EV charger questions Rhyl homeowners ask

Rhyl and Prestatyn split fairly cleanly: bungalows and estate housing with a drive, where a charger is straightforward, and older seafront terraces — many of them divided into flats — where the questions are about who owns the parking and how the sea air treats outdoor kit.

For a great many homes around here, yes and easily. A lot of the housing across Rhyl, Prestatyn, Kinmel Bay and Rhuddlan is bungalows and post-war estate housing with a driveway or garage, which is exactly what a home charger wants. Charging overnight on an EV tariff costs a fraction of the public rapids, and along this coast public charging is thin enough that having your own genuinely changes how you use the car. We check the incoming supply, the consumer unit and the earthing arrangement before we quote.

Often, but it's a different job and there's a step to do first. A lot of the big Victorian houses along the Rhyl and Prestatyn seafronts have been divided into flats, and in those the parking — a forecourt, a shared yard, a rear car park — is usually communal land you don't own outright, even where a space is understood to be yours.

That means written permission from the freeholder or managing agent before anything can go ahead, and a look at what your lease says. The supply side matters too: a house converted into four or five flats may have a shared or unusual arrangement at the meter position that needs checking properly. None of it is a dead end — it just needs sorting in the right order. Tell us the setup when you enquire.

Home chargers are built for outdoor use and properly weather-rated, so a well-chosen unit correctly installed will be fine. But salt-laden air is harder on outdoor equipment than inland weather, and the details are what make the difference over ten years rather than three: siting the unit on a sheltered elevation rather than one taking the full weather off the bay, using the right fixings and glands so nothing corrodes where the cable enters, and making sure the enclosure is properly sealed. If you're on the front at Rhyl, Towyn or Kinmel Bay, say so when you enquire and we'll factor it in.

Our installs start from £649 supplied, fitted and tested. What moves the price is the charger you pick and the cable run — a bungalow in Prestatyn or an estate house in Rhuddlan with the consumer unit near the drive is about as simple as it gets; a tall converted terrace where we're running from a basement or hallway meter out to a rear yard costs more. We quote the full figure up front, including any additional electrical work, so there's nothing added on the day.

Most installations are done in under 3 hours and you'll be charging the same day. A bungalow or estate house with the consumer unit near the parking is often quicker. Converted properties and older terraces, where the meter position is awkward or the run is long, take more time. We come along the A55 from our base near Ellesmere Port, so we book Denbighshire work properly rather than squeezing it onto the end of a day.

Almost never — a full rewire is rarely needed just to add a charger. What we do sometimes find in older Rhyl and Prestatyn property is an older consumer unit, a shared or looped supply between two houses, or earthing that needs bringing up to current standards. Converted guest houses and multi-flat properties are worth a proper look at the meter position too. Any of that is identified at survey and priced before we start. A looped supply usually needs your DNO — SP Energy Networks, which covers all of North Wales — to split it, and we handle that application for you.

For most homes, no. Worth knowing though: planning is devolved in Wales, so the rules are set by the Welsh Government and differ in detail from England's — much of the guidance you'll find online is written for England and may not apply to you. In practice a wall-mounted charger on your own property is usually fine.

Where it's worth checking first is if you're in a conservation area — parts of Rhuddlan, St Asaph, Denbigh and Ruthin have them — or if your property is listed. Anything involving the public footway, such as a cross-pavement cable channel, needs separate consent from Denbighshire County Council as highway authority, and grant support for those varies, so check current eligibility before you budget.

All the major brands — Ohme, Hypervolt, Zappi, Andersen, Simpson & Partners, EVEC and Sync EV, plus others on request. Every new home charger is a 'smart' charger, required by law since June 2022. We'll recommend what actually suits your house and your car rather than the priciest unit on the shelf, and on exposed coastal properties we'll factor the siting into that recommendation. If you've got solar, a Zappi is worth the conversation. If you're claiming a grant, we'll make sure your model is on the OZEV approved list.

Two different things, and both work in your favour. Being NAPIT-certified means we're registered electricians on a Government-approved competent person scheme — every install meets the current wiring regulations (BS 7671, Section 722), is fully tested, and we self-certify and notify Building Control for you. Being OZEV-authorised means we're approved to claim the EV chargepoint grant on behalf of eligible customers. Both matter if you ever sell — and if you're leasehold, your managing agent will want to see that paperwork too.

The coast and inland Denbighshire — LL15 to LL22. That covers Rhyl, the seafront, Kinmel Bay, Towyn, Rhuddlan, Dyserth, Meliden, Prestatyn, Gronant and Gwespyr, plus Abergele, St Asaph, Trefnant, Denbigh, Ruthin, Llanrhaeadr and Bodelwyddan. We come along the A55 from our base near Ellesmere Port — it's a proper run, so we schedule it properly, and it's the same team out to you every time, never a subcontractor.

Grant eligibility and amounts change, and some schemes differ in Wales — check gov.uk for the latest before you budget.
