Yes — if you have somewhere off-street to park, whether that's a driveway in Didsbury, a garage in Urmston or a rear yard off a Chorlton terrace, we can almost certainly fit a charger. Charging at home overnight on an EV tariff is far cheaper than the public rapids around the city, and you skip the queues entirely. We check the incoming supply, the consumer unit and the earthing arrangement before we quote, so you know it's safe and compliant before anyone starts drilling.

This is the question we get most in Manchester, and it deserves a straight answer: it's often possible, but it's a different job to a house, and you can't just order a charger and book us in. If you're in a block — Ancoats, the Northern Quarter, Castlefield, Salford Quays, New Islington — the parking is almost always communal land you don't own, even when the bay is allocated to your flat.

That means you'll need written permission from the freeholder or management company before anything can happen, and often a look at the lease. The technical side matters too: we need a viable route from a supply point to your bay, and where a block has limited spare capacity the building may need a proper load assessment rather than a single charger bolted on. Some blocks have already done this and have a process; others haven't thought about it at all.

It depends on where you park. Across Levenshulme, Longsight, Rusholme, Gorton and Moss Side there's a lot of terraced housing with a rear alley — if you can park in a back yard or reach it from an entry, we can usually mount a charger there and run the cable internally. If you only ever park on the street outside, you cannot legally trail a cable across a public footway without the council's agreement.

Cross-pavement channels, where the cable sits flush in the footway, are grant-supported at 75% of the cost up to £500, but they need highways consent from your local authority. Send us a photo of where you park and we'll tell you straight whether it's workable before you spend anything.

Most Manchester installations are done in under 3 hours and you'll be charging the same day. Straightforward jobs — a modern semi in Wythenshawe, Urmston or Prestwich with the consumer unit in the hall — are often quicker. Older terraces with a cellar meter position, or anywhere we need a longer run through the property, take a little more time. We give you a realistic window when we book, not a vague morning-or-afternoon.

Almost never. Manchester has a huge amount of Victorian and pre-war housing and we install in it constantly — a full rewire is rarely needed just to add a charger. What we do sometimes find in older properties around Longsight, Gorton, Harpurhey and Openshaw is an older consumer unit, a shared or looped supply between two houses, or earthing that needs bringing up to current standards. Any of that is identified at survey and priced before we start. A looped supply usually needs your DNO — either SP Energy Networks or Electricity North West, depending on your postcode — to split it, and we handle that application for you.

For most homes, no — a wall-mounted charger on your own property normally falls under permitted development. Where it's worth checking first is in the conservation areas: Ancoats, Castlefield, Victoria Park, Didsbury Village, Chorlton Green and Whalley Range among others, plus any listed building. Mill and warehouse conversions in Ancoats and around the city centre are frequently listed, which is a separate consent again.

One Manchester-specific point: the M postcodes cross several councils. Depending on your address, the authority you'd deal with might be Manchester City Council, Salford, Trafford, Tameside or Bury — and that matters for both conservation questions and any cross-pavement footway consent. We'll point you at the right one.

We'll recommend what actually suits your house and your car rather than the priciest unit on the shelf — for a lot of Manchester terraces a compact untethered unit is the sensible choice because there's simply less wall to work with. Two different things, and both work in your favour. Being NAPIT-certified means we're registered electricians on a Government-approved competent person scheme — every install meets the current wiring regulations (BS 7671, Section 722), is fully tested, and we self-certify and notify Building Control for you. Being OZEV-authorised means we're approved to claim the EV chargepoint grant on behalf of eligible customers. Both matter if you ever sell the house and a buyer's surveyor asks who did the work — and if you're in a leasehold flat, your management company will want to see that paperwork too.
