Wirral FAQs

EV charger questions Wirral homeowners ask

Wirral is really two jobs in one. Out west in Heswall, Caldy and West Kirby almost everyone has a driveway; in Birkenhead, Wallasey and Seacombe it's dense Victorian terraces with a back entry and no off-street parking at all. These are the questions that come up most across the peninsula.

Yes — if you have somewhere off-street to park, whether that's a driveway in Heswall, a rear yard in Birkenhead or a garage in Bebington, we can almost certainly fit a charger. Charging at home overnight on an EV tariff is far cheaper than the public rapids at the retail parks or along the M53, and you skip the queues entirely. We check the incoming supply, the consumer unit and the earthing arrangement before we quote, so you know it's safe and compliant before anyone starts drilling.

This is the most common question we get in Birkenhead, Wallasey, Seacombe and Tranmere, and the honest answer is: it depends on where you park. If you have a back entry, a rear yard or an alley you can reach, we can usually mount a charger there and run the cable internally. If you only ever park on the street directly outside, you cannot legally trail a cable across a public footway without the council's agreement — it's a trip hazard and they can make you remove it.

What has changed is that cross-pavement solutions — a channel set into the footway so the cable sits flush — are now grant-supported, covering 75% of the cost up to £500. These need Wirral Council's approval for the pavement works, not just ours. Send us a photo of where you park and we'll tell you straight whether it's workable before you spend anything.

Our Wirral installs start from £649 supplied, fitted and tested. What moves the price is the charger you pick and the cable run — an attached garage in Greasby where the consumer unit is three metres away costs less than a three-storey Victorian terrace in Birkenhead where we're running from a cellar meter up to a rear yard. We quote the full figure up front, including any additional electrical work, so there's nothing added on the day.

Most Wirral installations are done in under 3 hours and you'll be charging the same day. Straightforward jobs — an interwar semi in Upton, Moreton or Eastham with the consumer unit in the hall — are often quicker. Older terraces in Wallasey or Rock Ferry with a cellar meter position, or anywhere we need a longer run through the property, take a little more time. We give you a realistic window when we book, not a vague morning-or-afternoon.

Almost never. Wirral has a lot of Victorian and pre-war housing stock and we install in it constantly — a full rewire is rarely needed just to add a charger. What we do sometimes find in older properties around Birkenhead, Tranmere, Seacombe and New Ferry is an older consumer unit, a shared or looped supply between two houses, or earthing that needs bringing up to current standards. Any of that is identified at survey and priced before we start. A looped supply usually needs your DNO, SP Energy Networks, to split it — we handle that application for you.

For most homes, no — a wall-mounted charger on your own property normally falls under permitted development. Where it's worth checking first is if you're in one of Wirral's conservation areas or in a listed building: Port Sunlight and Hamilton Square are the strictest by some distance, and Oxton Village, Rock Park, Caldy, Thornton Hough and parts of Hoylake and West Kirby all have restrictions that can affect what goes on a front elevation. We'll flag it at survey if we think your property needs a check, and siting the unit out of sight usually solves it.

Anything involving the public footway — a cross-pavement channel — does need council consent separately. That's a different process to planning and we'll walk you through it.

All the major brands — Ohme, Hypervolt, Zappi, Andersen, Simpson & Partners, EVEC and Sync EV, plus others on request. Every new home charger is a 'smart' charger, required by law since June 2022. We'll recommend what actually suits your house and your car rather than the priciest unit on the shelf — for a lot of Wirral terraces a compact untethered unit is the sensible choice because there's simply less wall to work with. If you're claiming a grant, we'll make sure your model is on the OZEV approved list.

A home charger is 7kW, so it's slower than a public rapid — but it's designed to work overnight, not in twenty minutes. Almost every EV fully recharges between parking up and leaving for work. Pair it with an overnight EV tariff and you're charging at a fraction of public rapid rates, which for a typical Wirral commute — through the tunnel or down the M53 — is where the real saving comes from. Your car charges while you sleep and you leave every morning full.

Two different things, and both work in your favour. Being NAPIT-certified means we're registered electricians on a Government-approved competent person scheme — every install meets the current wiring regulations (BS 7671, Section 722), is fully tested, and we self-certify and notify Building Control for you. Being OZEV-authorised means we're approved to claim the EV chargepoint grant on behalf of eligible customers. Both matter if you ever sell the house and a buyer's surveyor asks who did the work.

The whole peninsula — every postcode from CH41 to CH49 and CH60 to CH63. That covers Birkenhead, Tranmere, Rock Ferry, Oxton, Prenton, Claughton, Bidston, Wallasey, Seacombe, Liscard, New Brighton, Poulton, Moreton, Leasowe, Upton, Greasby, Woodchurch, Hoylake, Meols, West Kirby, Caldy, Frankby, Irby, Pensby, Thingwall, Heswall, Barnston, Bebington, Port Sunlight, New Ferry, Bromborough, Eastham, Spital and Thornton Hough — plus Neston, Parkgate and Willaston just beyond the boundary. We're based at the southern end of the peninsula in Ellesmere Port, so Wirral is a short run straight up the A41 for us — it's the same team out to you every time, never a subcontractor.

Grant eligibility and amounts change — check gov.uk for the latest before you budget.
