For the great majority of Cheshire homes, yes. Off-street parking is far more common here than in the cities, and a driveway or garage is exactly what a home charger needs. Charging overnight on an EV tariff costs a fraction of public rapid charging — and away from the motorway corridors the public network is thin enough that having your own genuinely changes how you use the car. We check the incoming supply, the consumer unit and the earthing arrangement before we quote.

Usually, and where it's tight there's a way round it. A lot of Cheshire is genuinely rural, and properties out in the villages can sit a long way from the nearest transformer with a smaller incoming supply than a modern town house. That rarely stops you having a charger — load management lets us balance it against the rest of the house so you never exceed what the supply can take, instead of paying for an upgrade you don't need.

Where an upgrade genuinely is needed, that's a job for your DNO — either SP Energy Networks or Electricity North West, depending on your postcode, because the boundary runs through Cheshire — and it takes time, so we'd far rather find that out at survey. Farms and barn conversions also tend to need long runs between buildings, which we price properly rather than guess at.

Our installs start from £649 supplied, fitted and tested. What moves the price is the charger you pick and the cable run — a modern semi with the consumer unit near the drive is at the cheaper end; a period property, or a rural one where the meter is in a different building to where you park, costs more because the run is longer. We survey properly and quote the full figure up front, including any additional electrical work, so there's nothing added on the day.

Most Cheshire installations are done in under 3 hours and you'll be charging the same day. A modern house with the consumer unit near the parking is often quicker. Period property, and rural jobs with long runs between buildings, take more time — and we'd rather book the right amount of time than rush it. We give you a realistic window when we book, not a vague morning-or-afternoon.

Rarely, on either count. A full rewire is almost never needed just to add a charger — what we sometimes find in older property is an older consumer unit, a shared or looped supply, or earthing that needs bringing up to current standards, all of which is identified at survey and priced before we start.

On heritage, Cheshire has a lot of it: Chester's walled centre, the timber-framed streets of Nantwich, and conservation areas at Knutsford, Tarporley, Great Budworth, Prestbury and Alderley Edge among many others. It's nearly always a siting question rather than a flat no — a unit on a rear or side elevation, out of public view, is a far easier conversation. If your property is listed, listed building consent is separate from planning, and we'll tell you at survey if we think you need to speak to Cheshire West and Chester or Cheshire East first.

For most homes, no — a wall-mounted charger on your own property normally falls under permitted development. The thing that catches people out in Cheshire is which authority to deal with, because there isn't one "Cheshire Council". Depending on where you are it's Cheshire West and Chester, Cheshire East, Warrington Borough or Halton Borough, each a separate unitary authority with its own planning and highways teams.

That matters for conservation-area questions and for anything involving the public footway, such as a cross-pavement cable channel, which needs highways consent from the right one. Tell us your postcode and we'll point you at the correct authority.

All the major brands — Ohme, Hypervolt, Zappi, Andersen, Simpson & Partners, EVEC and Sync EV, plus others on request. Every new home charger is a 'smart' charger, required by law since June 2022. We'll recommend what actually suits your house and your car rather than the priciest unit on the shelf. Solar and home batteries are common across rural Cheshire, and if you've got either then a Zappi is worth the conversation. On period property, a discreet unit — or an Andersen, which can be specified to blend in — makes any conservation conversation easier. If you're claiming a grant, we'll make sure your model is on the OZEV approved list.

A home charger is 7kW, so it's slower than a public rapid — but it's designed to work overnight, not in twenty minutes. Almost every EV fully recharges between parking up and leaving in the morning. That's worth more in Cheshire than in a city: with rapid chargers concentrated on the motorway corridors, leaving home full every day is the whole point. Pair it with an overnight EV tariff and you're charging at a fraction of public rates.

Two different things, and both work in your favour. Being NAPIT-certified means we're registered electricians on a Government-approved competent person scheme — every install meets the current wiring regulations (BS 7671, Section 722), is fully tested, and we self-certify and notify Building Control for you. Being OZEV-authorised means we're approved to claim the EV chargepoint grant on behalf of eligible customers. Both matter if you ever sell the house and a buyer's surveyor asks who did the work — and on a period property, that paperwork gets looked at properly.
