Chester FAQs

EV charger questions Chester homeowners ask

Chester throws up questions almost nowhere else does. It's a walled city with one of the largest concentrations of listed buildings in the country, so alongside the usual cable-run and cost questions we get a lot of "am I even allowed?" — and the answer is usually yes, with a bit of thought about siting.

OZEV authorisedGrant-approved installer NAPIT certifiedCompetent person scheme CH1 – CH4 coveredAll Chester postcodes

Yes — if you have somewhere off-street to park, whether that's a driveway in Upton, a garage in Vicars Cross or a rear parking space off a Hoole terrace, we can almost certainly fit a charger. Charging at home overnight on an EV tariff is far cheaper than the public rapids around the city, and you skip the queues and the parking charges entirely. We check the incoming supply, the consumer unit and the earthing arrangement before we quote, so you know it's safe and compliant before anyone starts drilling.

Usually yes — it's a siting question, not a flat no. Chester has an unusually high concentration of heritage constraint: the city centre and the Rows, the Garden Quarter, Curzon Park, Handbridge, Boughton and village cores like Christleton and Waverton all carry conservation status, and there are a great many individually listed properties on top of that.

The general rule is that a charger on a rear or side elevation, out of view from the street, is far less likely to be a problem than one on a principal frontage. If your property is listed, listed building consent is a separate matter from planning and it can apply even to work that would otherwise be permitted development. We'll tell you honestly at survey if we think you need to speak to Cheshire West and Chester Council's conservation team before we go ahead — we'd rather flag it than land you with an enforcement problem.

Our Chester installs start from £649 supplied, fitted and tested. What moves the price is the charger you pick and the cable run — a modern semi in Upton or Huntington with the consumer unit near the drive is at the cheaper end; a Victorian villa in Curzon Park or a townhouse in the Garden Quarter, where we're running a long way from the meter to a rear yard and keeping the route discreet, costs more. We quote the full figure up front, including any additional electrical work, so there's nothing added on the day.

Most Chester installations are done in under 3 hours and you'll be charging the same day. Straightforward jobs — a post-war semi in Blacon, Lache or Great Boughton with the consumer unit in the hall — are often quicker. Older city-centre and Victorian properties where the meter is in a cellar, or where we're routing carefully to keep cable out of sight, take a little more time. We give you a realistic window when we book, not a vague morning-or-afternoon.

Almost never. Chester has a lot of Georgian and Victorian housing and we install in it constantly — a full rewire is rarely needed just to add a charger. What we do sometimes find in older properties around Hoole, Boughton, Handbridge and the Garden Quarter is an older consumer unit, a shared or looped supply between two houses, or earthing that needs bringing up to current standards. Any of that is identified at survey and priced before we start. A looped supply usually needs your DNO — either SP Energy Networks or Electricity North West, depending on your postcode — to split it, and we handle that application for you.

They are, and it's worth being straight about it. You cannot legally trail a cable across a public footway without the council's agreement — it's a trip hazard and they can require you to remove it. Cross-pavement channels, where the cable sits flush in the footway, are now grant-supported at 75% of the cost up to £500, but they need highways consent from Cheshire West and Chester Council, and in a conservation area or near the walls that can be a harder conversation than elsewhere.

If you have a rear entry, a courtyard or an allocated space off the street, that's usually the better route. Send us a photo of where you park and we'll tell you honestly what's workable before you spend anything.

All the major brands — Ohme, Hypervolt, Zappi, Andersen, Simpson & Partners, EVEC and Sync EV, plus others on request. Every new home charger is a 'smart' charger, required by law since June 2022. We'll recommend what actually suits your house and your car rather than the priciest unit on the shelf. On period properties the discreet, compact units tend to win, and where appearance really matters an Andersen can be specified to blend with the building. If you're claiming a grant, we'll make sure your model is on the OZEV approved list.

A home charger is 7kW, so it's slower than a public rapid — but it's designed to work overnight, not in twenty minutes. Almost every EV fully recharges between parking up and leaving for work. Pair it with an overnight EV tariff and you're charging at a fraction of public rapid rates, which on a typical Chester commute is where the real saving comes from. Your car charges while you sleep and you leave every morning full.

Two different things, and both work in your favour. Being NAPIT-certified means we're registered electricians on a Government-approved competent person scheme — every install meets the current wiring regulations (BS 7671, Section 722), is fully tested, and we self-certify and notify Building Control for you. Being OZEV-authorised means we're approved to claim the EV chargepoint grant on behalf of eligible customers. Both matter if you ever sell the house and a buyer's surveyor asks who did the work — and on a period property in Chester, that paperwork gets looked at properly.

The whole city and the villages around it — every postcode from CH1 to CH4. That covers the city centre, the Garden Quarter, Handbridge, Curzon Park, Boughton, Great Boughton, Hoole, Newton, Upton, Blacon, Lache, Westminster Park, Huntington, Vicars Cross, Guilden Sutton and Saltney, plus Christleton, Waverton, Rowton, Tarvin, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Eccleston, Dodleston and Farndon. We're based just up the A41 in Little Sutton, so Chester is a short run for us — it's the same team out to you every time, never a subcontractor.
