Nantwich FAQs

EV charger questions Nantwich homeowners ask

Nantwich is a different job to the city work. Parking is rarely the problem — most properties have a drive or a yard. What comes up here instead is period and listed buildings in the town centre, and rural supplies out in the villages where the nearest pole is a long way off.

In most cases, comfortably yes. Off-street parking is the norm around Nantwich — a drive in Stapeley or Wistaston, a yard behind a Welsh Row property, a barn or outbuilding out towards Acton or Wybunbury. Home charging matters more here than in town, too: the rural public charging network is thin, so having your own is the difference between planning journeys around chargers and not thinking about it. We check the incoming supply, the consumer unit and the earthing arrangement before we quote.

It's the single most common complication we see in south Cheshire, and it's worth understanding before you order a charger. Rural properties often sit a long way from the nearest transformer, and some have a smaller incoming supply than a modern town house — occasionally still a 60A or 80A main fuse. That doesn't stop you having a charger, but it does mean load management matters: we can set the charger to balance against the rest of the house so you never exceed what the supply can take, rather than paying for an upgrade you don't need.

Where an upgrade genuinely is needed, that's a job for your DNO — SP Energy Networks or Electricity North West depending on your postcode — and it can take time and carry a cost, so we'd always rather find that out at survey than on installation day. Farmhouses and converted barns also tend to need longer cable runs, which we'll price properly rather than guess at.

Usually yes, with thought about where it goes. Nantwich has an exceptional concentration of listed buildings for a town its size — the timber-framed properties around the town centre, Welsh Row, Hospital Street and Pillory Street among them — and the town centre conservation area covers a lot of ground. Village cores like Wybunbury, Bunbury and Audlem carry conservation status too.

The practical answer is nearly always siting: a unit on a rear or courtyard elevation, out of public view, is a far easier conversation than one on a historic frontage. If your property is listed, listed building consent is separate from planning and can apply even where planning wouldn't. We'll tell you at survey if we think you need to speak to Cheshire East Council first — we'd rather flag it than leave you with a problem.

Our installs start from £649 supplied, fitted and tested. Around Nantwich the cable run is usually what moves the price rather than the charger itself — a modern house in Stapeley or Shavington with the consumer unit near the drive is at the cheaper end, while a farmhouse where the meter is in one building and you park by another can need a substantially longer run. We survey properly and quote the full figure up front, including any additional electrical work, so there's nothing added on the day.

Most installations are done in under 3 hours and you'll be charging the same day. A modern house on one of the newer developments is often quicker. Period properties in the town centre, and rural jobs with long runs between buildings, take longer — and we'd rather book the right amount of time than rush it and leave cable where it shouldn't be. We give you a realistic window when we book.

Almost never. We work in period property constantly and a full rewire is rarely needed just to add a charger. What we do sometimes find in older Nantwich houses and farm properties is an older consumer unit, a shared or looped supply, or earthing arrangements that need bringing up to current standards — and on rural properties, occasionally a supply that warrants a closer look. Any of that is identified at survey and priced before we start. A looped supply usually needs your DNO — either SP Energy Networks or Electricity North West, depending on your postcode — to split it, and we handle that application for you.

All the major brands — Ohme, Hypervolt, Zappi, Andersen, Simpson & Partners, EVEC and Sync EV, plus others on request. Every new home charger is a 'smart' charger, required by law since June 2022. Two things tend to steer the choice around here: if you've got solar or a battery, which a lot of rural properties do, a Zappi lets you charge off your own generation; and if the property is period or listed, a discreet unit — or an Andersen, which can be specified to blend in — makes the conversation with the conservation officer much easier. If you're claiming a grant, we'll make sure your model is on the OZEV approved list.

A home charger is 7kW, so it's slower than a public rapid — but it's designed to work overnight, not in twenty minutes. Almost every EV fully recharges between parking up and leaving in the morning. That matters more out here than in a city: with public rapids few and far between in south Cheshire, leaving home full every day is the whole point. Pair it with an overnight EV tariff and you're charging at a fraction of public rates.

Two different things, and both work in your favour. Being NAPIT-certified means we're registered electricians on a Government-approved competent person scheme — every install meets the current wiring regulations (BS 7671, Section 722), is fully tested, and we self-certify and notify Building Control for you. Being OZEV-authorised means we're approved to claim the EV chargepoint grant on behalf of eligible customers. Both matter if you ever sell — and on a period or listed property, that paperwork gets looked at properly.

The town and the villages around it — CW5 and the surrounding CW postcodes. That covers Nantwich town, Welsh Row, the Barony, Stapeley, Shavington, Wistaston, Willaston, Acton, Henhull and Ravensmoor, plus Wybunbury, Hough, Weston, Blakenhall, Sound, Baddington, Brindley, Faddiley and Burland, and out to Audlem, Wrenbury, Bunbury, Haslington and Crewe. We come across from our base near Ellesmere Port — it's a longer run than our local work, so we book it properly rather than squeezing it in, and it's the same team out to you every time.

Grant eligibility and amounts change — check gov.uk for the latest before you budget.
